The source computer is definitely infected and the virus has embedded itself into the operating system and is attaching copies of itself to all emails being sent from the source computer. Never open an Email especially if it has any attachment if your scanners warn of potential harmful content as your system will be immediately infected. There is simply no virus /security software that will pick up or block 100% of the viruses/malware or spyware that inhabit the web. In many cases your system can be infected and you wont even know it, even the best software protection does not stop everything. In a worst case scenario, you can lose everything on your hard drive or have all your personal information accessed. Its a common practice nowadays used by criminal elements involved in identity theft. I'm not saying your friend is a criminal but their computer has certainly been compromised.
