We always take blocks of cheese, biscuits and packets of chocolate bars, never had any problems with customs. We even take in a couple of flagons of Aussie wine, which we declare and have never been questioned.
Just remember when you collect your bags if any have the dreaded chalk cross don"t try to go through "nothing to declare" because they will definately stop you and inspect the bags, better to declare what you've got and you shouldn't have any problems.
