Bali police chief says he must enforce porn law

The chief of Bali's police department, Insp. Gen. Teuku Ashikin Husein, has stressed that police officers are required the enforce Indonesia's new pornography law throughout the province.

'I have no option. The police must enforce every positive law in the country,' the police chief told members of the local media.

Insp. Gen. Ashikin indicated that the law would be implemented by means of a new governmental regulation that hadn't yet been established.

Last week, the governor of Bali, who at one time was a police chief, stated that the province would not be able to enforce the new pornography law, as it was not consistent with Balinese philosophical and sociological tenets.

The chief of police recognized the conflict, and said: 'We will try to hold dialogues with all parties about this issue.'

Leaders and residents in Bali have formed an organization called the Bali People's Component, and are challenging the new law by means of the Constitutional Court.

According to the citizens group, the new law would declare numerous ancient monuments obscene, meaning they would be subject to demolition. Prosecutors maintain that the law imposes the standards for obscenity by one group on others.

Bali's tourism operators are troubled about the application of the pornography law, and the impact that it could have on international visitors.
