Just got back last week.
I found that having diabetes does not impede or even delay our processing through airports to any great extent. There are just so many diabetics out there now...so the following process is quite routine.
I had my medication letter from my doctor saying what medications I was on, the supplies I needed to carry with me - including my BSL test kit. I declared my supplies-needles, insulin in its cool pack at the first screening checkpoint after immigration where my letter was looked at and my details registered in a file. I was amazed at how many entries were on the list for that day ...and it was only 7.00 am! Then it was straight through to duty free.
Once in Bali ... i was not even questioned.
Only the way back home i had no problems I just declared that I was a diabetic and my supplies were xrayed like the rest of my luggage.
As for hospitals ... BIMC is fully set up to cater for most contingencies and i would highly recommend them...though it could be expensive unless your son's diabetes is covered by your travel insurance.
