No you don't keep your number. Just make sure you've saved your contacts to you phone memory. Its all really straight forward. The one I just had was very reasonable - cost us Rp2000 per minute to call an Aussie land line, and Rp1000 for each SMS. The staff are usually great and give you instructions on how to get the best value from your credit. They'll also show you how to check credit etc. Just top up at the shop when you need to.
