Make the travel part of the experience.
Go up via Tirtaganga, and go into Amed from the north, and return by the coastal road to Amlapura (or visa versa)
Get a good driver who knows points of interest, and get away EARLY on the day you travel.
Its as much about the journey as it is the destination.
Search the forum for accomodation info, and have at least one meal at "Sails".
