Skimming devices read the information from the metalic strip on your card for later encoding on a new blank card (often at the same time as a legitimate transaction is being done. Debit /Credit, either card can be skimmed. If the pin number can be determined as well then the card can be accessed in a big way. Pin numbers can be worked out by people looking over your shoulder at the atm or recorded my taping your keystrokes at the atm, (usually with a secret a time/date stamped video recording done with a mico camera set above the atm keypad.
How to guard against fraud? Look out for abnormal scanner snouts stuck to ATM machines and put one hand over the keypad as you key in the pin numbers.
