In the last few years we have stayed at a wild assortment of hotels from big 5 star to little boutique hotels...all have their advantages.
Sofitel - loved it
MBR - hated it - feral
Sari beach - real disappointment
KP - big but great value for the position - good rooms
Tegal sari - bliss
Alam Shanti - heavenly - my favourite place ever
Tjampuhan - run down but gorgeous setting
Honeymoon Guesthouse - devine rooms but not very private
Besakih - tired rooms but great location and pools
Oasis Kuta - ok for a night
Bukungsari - too old for it now - but price is right etc etc
So I guess looking at our recent stays we do tend to prefer small places but certainly don't mind the odd big one too.
Standouts are tegal sari and Alam Shanti - hard to beat the atmosphere at either - total gems
