It's really easy to get the visa.. as advised before just take aussie dollars (allow for a bit of conversion) and pay that way. then get change in rp which gives you a bit of splash money for taxis etc. dont get sucked in by the porters at the airport and carry your own luggage (unless of course you really want a porter). the locals will KNOW you are a first timer so be prepared for a little scamming but dont worry you shouldnt get burnt too bad. when buying something just think of a price that you would be willing to pay for it and DON'T go over it. also search for dons guide on this forum.... very handy for first timers!
As for getting money over there what I always do is just take my atm card (atms everywhere over there). make sure to check with your bank about the fees and whether you can use your card in international machines. i find that our credit union gives us 5 free international withdrawls per month so it works out very affordable and conventient. the whole money changing thing over there can be very confronting especially for the newcomer (plenty of scams going on there) so the atm thing makes things a lot easier.
Do take a credit card or back-up card in case of emergency (8 trips we've never had a card swallowed or anything). Also remmember that you may need a PIN for your credit card when travelling over there due to the new credit cards with the chips in them.. just make a few enquiries with your bank.
Have a great time!!
