Hi,

My son was diagnosed last year when he was 9. He was in a coma and intensive care for two weeks. We had already paid for a two week family holiday to Phuket, (6 weeks later), after much dedate we decided to go anyway. Just wanted to let you know a bit about our experience. I found that his levels were low, i think because of the humidity, and all of the exercise we get on holidays, shopping for hours on end, walking, walking, walking, swimming everyday. The up side for him, was he could pretty much eat like a horse at the breakfast buffet. His jelly beans would melt, so take glucose tablets instead. You can bring your carbs ie: muslie bars, from Australia with you. And any left over you are allowed to bring back into Australia on return, as long as they are still sealed. He is on the double insulin injections, and one night we were at dinner, giving him his injection, and someone phoned the local police thinking we were druggies. Very scarey. So from then on we did his injections in private. Yes we had letters from his doctors etc. but in asia and with the language barrier, it was awful and very upsetting, especially for my son. I am off to bali in 4 weeks with my two kids, cant wait, but at the same time, like most of us, very worried about the decision. Truth be told, if I knew when I paid for the tickets what I know now, well, I doubt I would go. But I just have to trust all will be well. I wish you all the best for a wonderful holiday. If you have any more questions, just ask. Cheers, Shelley :)
