I live on the Gold Coast and work in Surfers Paradise. I would prefer my son to go to Bali any day. Surfers during Qld schoolies is okay as they have quite a bit of infrastructure to keep the younger school leavers entertained however there's talk of that being less over the coming years. The 'toolies' are a big worry and Surfers on any night isn't a great place for kids to hang around, fuelled by grog and the other nasties available.
Sure these nasties are available in Bali however the pack mentality of thousands of kids hell bent on a week of whatever it is they do here is pretty sad.
At least in Bali there is so much more to entertain them - the beach, the shops, the restaurants, and maybe a bit of touring around. Just being in a differnt country. Sure things might get a little out of hand in Bali nightclubs but the schoolies wouldn't be the main crowd ingredient there.
I have it to look forward to in 2 years with stepson having completed it without too much hassle a few years ago. I've been pushing the Bali thing for a while now. Hope it pays off.
