get a Pro XL Bebas Bali Sim Card in your unlocked mobile phone. The people in Bali will set it all up for you. Have a list of your friends/family numbers in case they get lost in cyberspace. Text each one and then they will have your number. You could call them as well if you wished, cheaper to text.
To check if your phone is unlocked put another sim card in your phone, from a different provider of course, if it works then your phone is unlocked,
To ring Aus from Bali...dial 01000 then 61 then the number you wish to phone dropping the first zero...eg to ring aus 02 97892234 you need to dial 01000 61 2 97892234.
To ring a mobile eg 0418 777 666 ....dial 01000 61 418 777 666.
If you get a simpati sim instead of XL you need to dial the prefix 007 then 61 etc if it's a Mentari sim then the prefix is 01016 then 61 then the number.
Clear as mud you say but sooo much cheaper than using your Aus sim. Whoever you buy your sim card from will be able to show you how anyway.
If you phone from your hotel phone it will be very expensive and if you can't get a sim straight away then the next cheapest way would be to go to an internet cafe and email or if they have phones then phone fom there.
