We recently travelled to Bali with our 4 children including 14 year old with autism. Plane was no problem as he is great with travelling. A hand held game like a DS is always helpful in the plane, plus he took several books ( I had to say no to the set of encyclopedias!)
We stayed in a villa in tuban, part of the Kuta Royale Complex for 2 weeks. We had a 3 bedroon villa which was great for Tom as he had his own space. There was a TV and DVD player in his room, which kept him busy.We paid $125 per night .It is relatively quiet here. The villas are privately owned with some being rented out for holidays and some are private homes. The complex is inside a large fence and has security on the gate. There is a shared pool for the complex, which was very quiet. it is a 5 minute walk to the main tourist areas. This brings you out near the Febris/Dynasty. We would usually catch a Taxi home which was never more than 1000 rp. Tom became very proficient in haling taxis (he doesnt like to walk)The apartment had a microwave and cooking facilities, so useful if we didnt want to eat out. Tom loves his food and can eat spicy food hotter than i can bare. He ordered a different meal every time we ate. Taking something with you to entertain the kids like the DS, is useful when you are at restaurants. Luckily they are are normally fairly quick at producing drinks and then meals, so we never had to wait too long.
Interconnectong rooms at a hotel may also be suitable for you, depending on how many of you there is.
We also spent time in Candi Dasa which is very quiet, and not hassly or busy like kuta. Tom enjoyed it here. If you have any more questions please ask.
Have a great time, we did, and really enjoyed the family time together.
