They are correct about the tickets as per IATA. One of the other rules is that if an airline cancels flights etc then they are bound to either reissue the ticket on next available and compensate if there is more than an 8 hour delay. Alternatively they can turn over the ticket to another airline at no cost to traveller. You might like to confirm with travel agent what the likely scenario will be.
