In both Poppies 1 & Poppies 2 there are many budget hotels that are pleasant & quiet. The rooms are usually set well back from the bust roads. La Walon in Poppies 1 is very good, cheap & very close to the action at night & good shopping during the day.
Don't bother self-driving down in the tourist strip of Tuban, Kuta, Legian & Seminyak. The traffic is horrid, no parking & anyway taxis are very cheap. If you want to explore other parts of Bali & are brave, then self-driving is a good option. Be sure to have an International Driver's Lic, travel insurance & get an up-to-date map from Periplus. Drive slowly & carefully & enjoy.
