If you buy US$ in Australia, you usually get a lower rate than the official exchange rate & some places charge commission.
You can buy US$ at the post office without any commission.
If you decide to use AUD$ to pay the visa, ask for a receipt & you'll be able to see the rate they use. Probably $2 or $3 difference per person.

If you sell leftover Rupiah when back in Australia, you get a very low exchange rate here. The buying or selling rate is never the official exchange rate at Money changers in Australia.
