I know it is a common policy for airlines to charge a fee for changing tickets but last month I flew on an upgraded ticket (to Business Class) from Denpasar to Singapore and then onto Jakarta. Due to my Singapore medical appointments being changed I had to catch a later flight the same day to Jakarta from Singapore. Garuda charged me 25% of the total mileage of BOTH legs of the journey. I have registered my feelings with them and their response -

We respond to your first question, as it is stated on GFF Membership Guide Book, page page 33 item no. 10 : any cancellation and change of schedule of an award ticket and upgrade award will incur a mileage deduction of 25% of the total mileage with a valid ticket/s.

Okay point taken but who reads all that information anyway. So be warned.

Is it common practice for airlines to do this with upgraded tickets and I read on this FORUM that many people talk about upgrades with Garuda - any other expreiences with tis would be of interest to me.
