not sitting by pool or beach.somebody on the forum mentioned to do a trip to Mengwi and Tanaban which would be very different from the usual trips to ubud,monkeys,tanah lot,ulawatu etc etc.we have done all of them so we thought we would try the above,I think cracker suggested the above.Our driver was wayan who drives the 'green machine'(toyota kajang)that has seating for 8 if needed,the kajang was immaculate,air con great and wayan was a pleasure to be with,he knew his stuff and asked why we wanted to go to the above and we told him we wanted go somewhere different.He said he had only been asked to do the same trip once before in his entire driving career but knew the area well.Off to the mengwi markets and they are the real deal,no bintang shirts,versache bags,just stuff for the locals.There was pleanty of livestock for sale(baby cows and all that sort of stuff.huge garden center area and all sorts of hand held farm and garden implements.Heaps of food stalls,there was none of the "you look in my shop" routine.On the third floor there was a guy selling leaches in a bowl and a wooden penis next to it.J asked what the leechs were for,i thought they would be put on wounds to get rid of the infected area if all else failed(eg antibiotics).think I have seen on tv a few times. J said whats the penis doing there i said i dont know.J asked wayan and he said they put leeches on penis to make men verile.I bought the lot and the stall holder thought Christmas had come eary this year.From there went to Tanaban which had another market. we had a good walk around and wayan and i had lunch there in a stall,as usual J refused and had a sprite.I had bakso ayam,rice and lamb satay(lamb a little tough but he sauce was to die for.We went to a huge temple on the way back to.Whole trip took 5 hrs.We payed Wayan a fee of 50,000 per hour for his services and car.TIP If you drink spirts The Bottle Shop on the beach rd.which runs parallel to the beach between Seminyak and kuta has mosts spirits in 700ml bottles for 130,000 $14.50 its less than duty free.the directions are simple.walk south on beach road past padma,past melasti and about 200 mtrs south of melasti you will see a Circle K its just about 30 mtrs south of CK.
