from my experience of travelling to Bali about 3 times per year, I'd have to say that that's not always the case.
Last September I did get change in Australian Dollars when I paid my V.O.A with AU $$, however every other time I have recieved my change in Rupiahs and have always paid my V.O.A with AU$...Remember though if you do get your change in Aussie $$ that you will be short changed as they are not allowed to accept Aussie gold coins, but obviuosly it would be only a few dollars less.
