Hmmm...I rescued my sister and her hubby a couple of months ago from a fairly well known travel chain who were quoting outrageous prices per person and not per room. This was for low season!
I went for 3 star type places...small, often well known though so can can often be booked out...booked either through the hotel or a well known internet booking site depending on cost and also remember hotels sometimes don't include breakfast or taxes on their quotes where the internet sites usually do.
Booked hotels in Jimbaran, Gili Trawangan, Sanur and Ubud. Average cost was about $AUD45 per room (> one up from standard room) per night. Ended up with a saving of a tad under $AUD1500 if taking the offer of the agent for a 2 week stay and their quote was just for 3 star biggish places in Kuta, Legian, Sanur.
Sister and her hubby so pleased with their hotels they now see that it is possible to travel more frequently as DIYs.
I do think though it is important to check various avenues because sometimes there are bargains if hotels have soft openings etc.
