Maybe the problem is the language barrier. However it is more than likely that the folk here are talking about a sponsored visa, so that you can stay here for longer than the 30 day VOA normally allows.
This has nothing to do with volunteer work!
If you look at some of the info that has been suppied by Mic, you will see that you do not actually need sponsorship to stay in Indonesia for the 5 weeks that you mention.
As for doing volunteer work in exchange for cheaper accommodation, this also is not practical. As an example. If you stayed at my place and were seen cleaning the pool, this would be deemed as working. You would face deportation and I would be looking at a sustantial fine.
About 10 years ago, the Immigration people in Central Sulawesi threatened to goal me and then deport me because I was giving local people FREE swimming lessons.
