Yeh, I think most drivers would feel uncomfortable in tourist places. They are happy to come back or natter away with other drivers or security chaps. I usually give them 20,000 or so and with this they can get nasi or soto and also pocket some for home. Many restaurants will also give them a plate of something while they wait.
Of course if you are out in the middle of the island and stopping for a warung snack and drink then drivers are usually quite happy to join you on the stools.
