we did the same sort of thing with Air Asia, Bali, Bangkok, Phuket, KL, Bali.
Stayed at this resort last year and it is lovely, if you can get a pool access room do so. (try thru Direct Rooms, they have a great pay for 4, stay for 8 deal)
the room is spacious and comfortable with the usual fridge, safe etc.
try and get one about half way down the block as the water goes from really shallow to deep.
there is a great massage ledge/seat as well as a waterfall.
there is a pool bar which you can swim across to or use your duty free on your little verandah.
havent stayed at the Kumala Pantai but the Karon Sea Sands really was nice.
lovely buffet in the restaurant and lots of restaurants within walking distance, specially round the corner in the main drag of Karon. can stock up on drinks and snacks there as well at a supermarket.
try and go to Fantasea, its a wonderful show and worth the money.
we also did a few tours from the desk in the lobby as we hadnt been to Phuket for many many years and were a bit unsure.
found it easy to barter with drivers to go somewhere but not to get back, usually more to get back than to go to say Patong. still cheap by country Victoria prices.
people are lovely in Thailand, altho I found them to be super nice in Bangkok.
