I would endorse taking along the international driving licence, not necessarily because of the police, but because you could get problem with your insurance without one.
(I get the impression that traffic police problems are a Kuta phenomenon. In my Scandinvian naivity I have actually stopped to ask the police for directions in the more rural parts of Bali. They have been very nice every time.)
