We're travelling with a toddler in March and we also contemplated just buying our own microwave when we got there and taking a microwave steam steriliser, but this is what we're now planning:
Sterilising - Milton tabs dissolved in bottled water in a plastic container.
Food - we've gotten our son used to eating food at any temperature (warm, room temp, even cold!) so we don't have heat his food ;) Woolies has a great range of food in pouches (not as heavy as tins/ jars) called 'Raffertys' which we'll be taking with us just in case he doesn't like the local food or wants something familiar.
Warming Bottles - we're trying to get him used to drinking cold milk and not wanting his bottle (easier said than done). But if we need bottles warmed we'll just fill a container with boiling water and sit the bottle in the hot water for a while to take the chill off (just like you do with expressed breastmilk). No need for a microwave that way.
Drinking water - we've taught our son to drink from a straw, so we're taking a packet of plastic straws to with 'normal' water bottles instead of always having a sterile sippy cup, we can sterilise the straws (in the milton solution) and carry them in a ziplock bag.
Also taking antibacterial wipes and lots of Aqium gel to wipe his hands and face especially before eating.
