we did it with 2 kids 14 and 18. It takes a while 4-6hrs depending on how many ferries are waiting at the other end. Yes you get looked at but we just smiled at people and tried to make conversation wherever we could. We had books and a DVD player and the time went quickly. However the loos are a bit scary and would only go if I absolutly had too. Its really cheap. We had a hire car and the good thing was being able to just drive off at Lembar, must admit that the travellers that were getting rides did look a bit hassled. My main advice would be travel early in the day so you arrive in daylight we arrived at 7.30 at night and I can imagine that organising transport at that time may have been scary.
