As you might have seen from my reply to purplest, I have seen places where children and adults CAN become unpleasant if "gifts" are not forthcoming. When last in Bali (2002) I saw no evidence of this so I hope that's still largely the case. However, if "rich" tourists continue to do this, it gradually changes the relationship between visitors and locals, imperceptibly at first but difficult to reverse in the long term. I really don't object to people leaving their children's clothes or shoes (if in good nick) behind for Balinese people, if that would help them out, giving to charities or schools, sponsoring a child as Dex has very generously done or even giving out the occasional little pressie. It is not my intention to criticise other people on this forum, everyone seems to always have the best of intentions, so I was only wanting to know the situation at present as I would not want to offend our hosts for the day.Anyway, that's all I've got so thanks to all who have responded. Cheers to all, Yak
