It is a lot better and easier to fly. There are flights daily between Bali and Makassar (this takes just under one hour). Current cost varies between 700,000 rp and 1,000,000rp. This is around about $100 U.S or Aud.
If you decide to go to Makassar and then want to travel on to places such as Toraja, please make an effort to contact Dodo "The Pen Man of Makassar" he is a top quality guide and a great person.
Sulawesi is a magnificent place to see. It is rough, frustrating and backward but it is beautiful.
