I can never understand why so many people compare either what they choose to pay a driver,or for any other service, with what it costs in Australia?.
An average person working in your hotel for instance will earn approx rp 30,000 per day, will you work for that at home?,of course not, but then again the cost of living at home is that much greater isnt it.
So it gets down to people, mistakenly, saying I am only paying x amount of dollars for this service, this cant be enough so I will give more. This is/will be the main reason people say "up to you what you pay me" knowing this happens and it is not just in indonesia either.
Others say but he has to hire a vehicle, yes of course some do and others pay lease/hire purchase to buy their own, but in most cases when asked will quote a figure that it costs them that is far higher than it actually does, you would be surprised how little some of these vehicles cost the drivers to use,I have an idea of their cost as Just about every time im in bali I hire a car and I know that i pay more than the locals will and my costs plus fuel used is a whole lot less than the RP 500,000 etc per day than some people talk about which leaves most drivers making a very good income indeed comparitively.
Yes i know it is everyones choice about what to pay for anything, and yes I overpay myself, volunterily, on things at certain times but I do so based on the fact that it is my choice to do so without thinking "this is cheap because it would cost me more at home" when in actual fact very little is "cheap" to foreigners comparitive to what locals pay, which is "the proper price" for whatever goods or service you are buying.
