When departing MEL that's where you hand over the green outgoing passenger card so I'm assuming that procedure will always stay, you get your stamps there too.
Coming home if you go through the e-passport you won't get a stamp:-(
Those passport stamps have settled 'disputes' in this house when one says "when we went such and such a place in 93" we dig out the old passports for proof... I generally win LoL
