We hire a car and drive all over the place including lombok. The traffic is very much less once you are out of the tourist areas. We have driven right around the coast and through the middle quite a few times and we love it. Much more freedom, no stopping at the drivers friends shops or restaurants and speaking to the locals when you get lost.
We use a hire place in Padma St, Karteeks express (or something like it) Have the contact details if you are interested. We pay 150,000rp a day for a large 6-7 seater car.
