"The war on terrorism has claimed at least one unintended victim lately: your travel insurance" ...screamed the headlines in Saturdays Age travel section.
The article by Clive Dorman referred to a paper posted on allsafetravels.com by Tony Cordato (travel lawyer) raised disturbing & complicated legal issues . Mr. Cordato claims that ambiguity in the travel advisories issued by DFAT deems travel insurance technically void even though insurers continue to pay out on claims for Australians travelling to Bali. "Because of the complexity of the legal issues raised by Cordato, representatives of insurers & the Insurance council of Australia were unwilling to be interviewed at the time of publication" states Dorman.
The problem lies with the level-four advice, which is reconsider your need to travel. "Reconsider reads like a warning" according to Cordato.
Seems Mr. Cordato may have opened pandoras box. Let's hope common sense prevails here & we don't see a repeat of the appalling (in)action by (some) mean spirited & greedy insurance companies on Australian flood victims in the recent past.....Russ
