I've had about as many birthdays and the same fitness level as you and didn't have any dramas when I did the climb this year. If you do strike problems, the guides give you a hand.
Just start the climb no later than 4.30am, take water and a torch (if you have a miner's light all the better), wear sturdy shoes and light clothes (but take a light jacket for when you reach the top and aren't exercising) and take rests when you need them.
You'll be expected to buy a drink for your guide (20 000rp for a coke) and it doesn't hurt to buy one yourself. There's also a hut up the top where you can get coffee/tea and a hot snack.
If you have a clear morning, take the long way back as you get to see the other craters and it's easier than the way you go up (can be slippery and pretty steep in places).
There are some hot springs and restaurants that you can go to when you finish but I just headed to Legian after a short rest and was back by midday.
Wayan Budiarta organised was our driver and he organised our transport and climbing guides. Text/phone Wayan on +62 812 390 5344 or email him at roundaboutbali@yahoo.com.au
Climbing the volcano was one of the best things I've ever done in Bali.
