You won't find public phones out in the street like you do in other parts of the world. There are shops called wartels you can go to that have phones where you pay by the minute to make calls but they're not always conveniently located if you want to be able to make local calls with any sort of regularity.

You can buy yourself a local SIM card for your cellphone though, and it's a fairly inexpensive thing to do. From memory, you pay an up front charge of something like Rp50,000 and then on top of that you pay for some credit as well - usually another Rp50,000 or so. You can call and SMS locally for very low rates and can also call and SMS home much cheaper than other ways as well.

AND it's much more convenient than rushing out to try and find the nearest wartel to make a 30 second call to a local phone.
