there have been rare cases. Maybe your friend got Dengue Fever which is not prevented by taking tabelts before hand.Very similar symptoms to Malaria but IT IS NOT malaria, though one could get confused by the two.
If you feel safer taking tabelts, suggest Doxycycline. best to try before you go to see if you are allergic to them.
Best not to get Larium, very strong and have many side effects.
I myself travelled Indonesia last year west of Bali- Java Sumatra, Aceh and then Lombok 5 days and Sulawesi and did not take any malaria prevention.
But I take with me a prescription for Malarone just in case I succumb to malaria and I know to start taking the tablets and get myself to a medical centre pronto.
This is something I have worked out with a doctor from the Travel centre here in Sydney and so far it works for me.
Suggest you take RID Tropical Strength if you are from Aust and cover up in the evenings and burn mosquito coils at night.
You can also leave a fan on at night as that keeps them away or sleep in air con room.
