While DJ was happily engrossed in inspecting carved wooden cats, unbeknown to her i helpfully tried to bargain with the shop owner on my friend's behalf. I couldn't get the shop owner to go below what DJ pays for them at home.
Completely forgetting my new-to- Bali friend, DJ, who hadn't heard anything of the exchange between the seller and i, my parting comment to the seller was, " Well we're going to Sukawati markets tomorrow and we'll get them for a quarter of the price you're asking." The shop owner was outraged. She let out a high pitched squawk before running over to DJ, snatching the cats out of her hand, and slamming them back down on the shelf. The seller then chased us out of the shop loudly swearing at us. Poor DJ had no clue what had started all this and her astonished face, combined with the seller shouting curses at our departing backs, made me fall about in hysterical laughter. My laughter further enraged the seller who followed us down Poppies 2 shouting out for other sellers to come see i guess, because they all rushed out of their shops to have a look.
Coming to greet us was my husband, and now i was confronted by his astonished face at the ruckus, which made me laugh even harder.
I don't think i ever did tell innocent DJ or my husband what had happened because every time i tried to, i'd start laughing again.
