Sometimes you can be so obtuse! Susie did not mean that she battered her driver (as in battered fish). She wrote that they battered the hotel proprietor (?with a cricket bat or a baseball bat?) for a reduced price. She sounds like such a lovely person, I think that she meant to write "bartered". She may have had goods & services with which to barter. But I think that she meant to say that she BARGAINED with the hotel manager.
Susie, I enjoyed the description of you trip very much and I would be interested in doing it, on my next visit to Bali. And I am truly sorry for being such a pedant.
