FF seating on each flight is limited to just a few seats in the overall total of passengers... at one time I recall the rate was about 10 FF seats per 100 passenger seats, but this may well have altered with newer airline policies. Couple this with the sad fact that there are now about 1/3 of the flights that there used to be, and bookings are hard to come by, especially on the more direct routes. It was also a policy that senior level flyers got some priority, especially with "last minute" bookings, I recall that we were Gold level, and could book 2 or 3 days before 'standard' level.
As you say, if you have to buy a 'one way' fare it will be somewhat more expensive. I would suggest that you might get the best package rate from your travel agent that you can for the Bali trip, and use the FF points to either upgrade domestically, or travel to another venue that is more readily available on FF tickets. Just our thoughts.
