My first ever trip to Bali in 94 was in the 2nd week of January. About our 3rd or 4th day there, the rain started coming down (beginning of the wet season) and it rained every day from then onward. Extremely humid the whole time too.
I've since been in March, August and November. August was definitely my pick as far as weather and comfort, but has also been the most expensive and hardest to get tickets/accomodation unless you book early.
The rain and humidity didn't ruin my first trip at all though, but having experienced different times of the year, I'd probably not go back in January again by choice.
