- good for chilling out but there are things to do, depending on your interests.
From Tabanan the road shortly swings left to the coast at Soka near the coast about half way along thet great sweep of black sand beaches an the south west of Bali and there are nice vistas down the last of the slope to sea level. Journey gently along the road here and take in the local 'real?' rural Bali on the edges of this main and busy highway fron Java.
If you're looking for high class accommodation watch for Puri Dajuma Cottages signs on your left. On the beach-side reefs here you'll find little fishing villages and a concrete boat modeled on the edge of the shallows as amemorial to I Gusti Ngurah Rai (for whom the airport is named) who sailed along this coast on raiding parties against either the Dutch or the Japanese - maybe both - not sure now.
There are accommodations more towards the backpacker and surfer levels around Mederi with warungs and at least one nice International style restaurant.
Pause at some of the river crossings and see the local style of fishing.
After Medewi but before Negara there is the temple of Pura Rambut Siwi perched atop a bluff on the beach edge. I find it eerie to sit here on the edge and listen to the wind but down on the beach is the real secret of the place in the limestone caves where there is a holy freshwater spring.
In Negara there is the local orphanage, in the main street and another at the Catholic community of Palasari a few Kms past Negara.
If you're in Negara at the right time you could go to the bull races down towards the coast where you will alspo find the Bugis fishing community.
And so I could go on - to Gilimanuk and it's ferries, to the graves of the Balinese 'Romeo and Juliet', the archeological site and museum, to more significant temples - - - -
But it all depends on what your interests are.
Have a look at the link beow. Have a good trip out west.
