We stayed at the Blue Moon Villas (brilliant place - check the website for details) which i think is a few properties before Life In Amed on the way there if i'm not mistaken.
We stayed in a villa at the Blue Moon and the smell was fine. They are however doing so building next door at the monet, but it wasn't like the noise builders make here! No machinery noises, just like sound like a hammer and chisel on rock. Wasn't a big deal really - and we were in the villa closest to the noise.
The smell: Well, as far as i could tell it is a farming community and walking up and down the road there were various pigs/cows/goats either in pens or tethered to trees. So yep, there is a farm-yardy smell. The people of Amed were very friendly and the previous poster is right in saying that there is nowhere to shop. There are a couple of warungs should you need stuff like razors/deoderant.
I can understand that Amed isn't everyones cup of tea. I found it was great to get away from the crowds of South Bali for a few days. Amed is the place to go if you want to relax, eat, snorkel, swim, read, tan and relax some more!
I can't give you any info for Life In Amed, sorry, but the few place we stopped and nosed around near the Blue Moon all looked very nice.
Have a nice holiday :)
