When on Lombok 2nd week July, school holiday season. Stayed at Sengiggi the tourist town, it was moderately busy. There was an Indo doctors conference in Mataram, so Sengiggi got the overflow. We took a day trip to the south and to Kuta Lombok and its very quiet. Poor infrastructure and not alot of development money being spent. The trinket sellers have few potential customers and were persistent. The white coral/sand beach was virtually deserted. Great for photos.
Unless you are a surfer group I cant imagine South Lombok being a particularly desirable holiday place. Do the Gillis and Sengiggi, they are tried and tested relaxed holiday destinations.
Lombokians talk of the boom days back in mid 90's before Asian money meltdown and Bali bombings. They are all hold in their hopes on a new airport that may be built in the next decade. "Be careful what you wish for".
