I go from Brisbane via Singapore with Singapore airlines. For me much better than flying to Sydney. The big thing is that on the way back my luggage is checked through to Brisbane. I don't have to land in Sydney go through customs and then go to domestic to get home. The cost is about the same with accomodation which I book direct. It may cost more but not much. FF I go via Cairns and Darwin.
When I travelled in the 80's you had to wait for much longer period for connecting flights. It doesn't worry me as long as I get there.
Everybody is different in what they want. I have been all over Asia and my preference is Bali.
