U have a couple of options, first if u want to use ur own sim card from australia while in bali u will need to get global roaming set up on ur phone by ur phone carrier before u leave. This option u will face expensive call costs, and will also have to pay money per minute to receive calls.
Ur second option is to purchase a local sim card while in bali, they are available in many locations. This option will give u cheaper call costs and u dont have to pay to receive calls, but people calling u from home will have to pay more to contact u.
Pulsa (indo word for credit) can be purchased for as little as 5000Rp to 100 000Rp. I spent 2 weeks in bali recently and i used about 150 000Rp of pulsa and i was texting my friends a lot. I know if i had of used my home sim it would have cost me way more than that!!!!!
