I'm not sure what conflicting reports you would have heard about Lombok and the Gilis but we love going there and always have a great time. One thing I would say though, its not a day trip type of thing and rather than adding it on to your Bali holiday why not make it your main destination?
Flying is easy and cheap and there is a complete range of accomodation both in price and standard.
