A good and safe driver is pretty easy to find in Bali. Some are more interested in their own agenda rather than yours, but that is to be expected where work and money are hard to come by. When you can find one that doesn't hustle you, albeit charmingly, you have the best of it. Well, I have got a beauty for you. He is a 28 year old married man with a 1 year old son, very good English, a great attitude and a sense of humor. This describes a good percentage of the Balinese drivers, but here is where we get special. 90% of the dvds in Bali come from a company owned by an elderly Chinese man, it is through a unmarked door (there are occasional crack downs on the dvd business) up a flight of stairs and is only open to those recognized by the staff. Dvds cost less than 7,000 rupiah in decent sized orders and Cheppy will be happy to take you there. Have a teenager driving you and him nuts. Send him out with Cheppy for the day. He'll be happy on a motorbike with a helmet, access to video parlors and the skateboard and roller blade spots. We bought a big bag of original watches (non Bali knock offs) as gifts for friends and the beach people at he Bali Hai and elsewhere, and most were in need of batteries. Rather than spend the time and effort to round up the batteries and paying tourist prices, we just gave the bag to Cheppy had him take care of it. What he saved us in hassle and battery prices made for good payday for him. Whatever kind of car you need he can arrange for inexpensively. My wife carried his card in her pocket, and if she needed picking up or help with getting understood at a vendors, she would call and he would be there promptly with her helmet and a helping hand. Business is slow and for a three week period we employed him often. He took us to Ubud, 8 days later to Lovina, and 3 days later back to Tuban. If he pays 100,000 rupiah for a full days car use, another 100,000 for petrol and makes another 100,000 for himself, he has had a good day. He alsao has access to part day car use for 30,000 rupiah for a few hours. You will pleasantly surprised with how useful he can make himself. I found it made sense financially and emotionally to have him pick us up in Ubud and shuttle us to Lovina. We paid 300,000 rupiah, made several stops and had an enjoyable day. We even stopped at the Hardy's in Singaraja to buy supplies before checking into the Aditya Cottages. Much better than settling in and then having to go out for beer, water and nibbles to fill up the fridge. My wife bought some tiny skulls in Sukawati and gave them to Cheppy to have the guy who writes your name on those big seashells for outrageous money and got him to put names and initials on the skulls. It cost us less then 10,000 rupiah for 3 of them. His usefulness is up to your imagination. We have used him for two years now and he can be trusted in his intent, his ability and his truthfulness.
