Have tried most things for my son's car sickness including homeo pathic stuff and the wrist bands and of course ginger everything. The only thing that works is just knocking him out which Trael Calm seeems to gently do. He actually ends up with a migrane so have to jusy get him to sleep as much as possible.
I was exactly the same as a kid and as an adult prefer to drive or must have front seat... We'll get there though. He knows the drill and reminds me now to give him his tablet an hour before we leave.
