hi Jack,
I had never tried to give up, was an 80++ a day Camel plain smoker and had smoked from the time I was about 15 to the time I was 50.
I set a date, and then I stopped.
We set up a separate savings account and transfer about the same amount each month as we would have had we still been smoking.
it is the only thing we are religious about and that money goes into the savings account before anything else, on the premise that we would have bought smokes no matter what so we save that money no matter what.
If you go to your doctor he might prescribe a medication called Zyban which you may find helps.(it can have some nasty side effects tho if you are unlucky)
I guess it comes down to determination, I am the sort of person that does something all in, and if I am going to do something am so damned stubborn that I can will myself not to do it just so "it" doesnt win.
another thing you could try is the "quit" line, they have a range of ideas and tips to help you if you want to give up.
I guess that really deciding you want to give up is what you have to do.
think of all the things you could do with the money you could save if that the sort of thing that works for you.
good luck what ever you decide, and enjoy the fact that in Bali you are allowed to enjoy a legal activity in most places.
