Hi. The flight over was ok- flying in the am was good timing as he wasn't due for a sleep until about midday. We boarded when they did the 1st call for 'elderly and parents with children' so were basically sitting on the plane whilst we waited for evey other passenger to board (about 40 mins!) I suggest waiting if you can (don't sit right by the gate) On the way home we boarded last so only had to wait a few mins before the plane started moving.
As far as entertaining him on the flight... be prepared! We had an assortment of snacks, so he just chomped on Sultana's for take-offs/landings and had no probs with ears. One other thing- if you can get an isle seat, I think this is better so you can sit and he can stand/run in the isles! Going over we had this, but coming home we had window/middle and it was a nightmare, esp as we were always up and down to the locker fetching toys/snacks etc!
It's only a 3.5 hr flight and we found that he was okay for the first couple of hours exploring buttons, buckles etc and then we just gradually gave him things to keep him occupied. Having said this, we did have a few times on the way home where he just screamed and screamed (usually when the belt was put on for turbulance) and there wasn't much we could do! In the end, I knew he was SO tired so just bear-hugged him and sang in his ear, told him it was time for sleep and he crashed out. Slept through the landing and all!
I'm sure it will go well for you. It was our sons first time on a plane too and although it was a bit stressful at times, it wasn't for a long duration.
Enjoy your holiday!!
