I do not take my laptop with me to Bali. I print out all my e-tickets and addresses. I also leave all my e-tickets and important messages in my inbox in my email account. If I lose the e-tickets, I can go to an Internet Cafe and print them off again.
Like the previous poster, I check my emails every 2 or three days. Internet cafes are common in the Kuta and Legian area, especially in Jalan Legian and Gang Poppies 2. These cafes are cheap.
When I was in Bali in December last year, the Internet was either down or very slow for two weeks due to an eathquake near Taiwan breaking an undersea cable. This problem affected Taiwan, China, Malaysia. Phillipines and Indonesia, I did not miss the Internet.
Theft is fairly common in South East Asia, so leaving your laptop at home is a means of protecting it. Power surges are also common in South East Asia, sometimes frying your surge protector and the laptop!
Having said all that, I did notice a few Jetstar passengers using their laptops to watch DVDs rather than hiring a personal DVD player from Jetstar.
